The Brothers Gallagher: Liam Takes Noel to Court
On August 18, 2011, Liam Gallagher sued his brother Noel Gallagher for libel as a result of remarks Noel made following the break up of their band, Oasis. While Oasis announced that they had to cancel their 2009 headlining gig at the V Festival due to Liam being stricken with laryngitis, Noel had recently stated that the cancellation was in fact due to Liam being too hungover to perform. Liam was offended and felt that Noel’s statements questioned his professionalism as a musician.
Liam also claimed in his lawsuit that Noel wrongly stated that the fight that led to the breakup of Oasis resulted from Liam’s desire to promote his clothing company, Pretty Green. Again, Liam claims this is erroneous as such a discussion never occurred between the two brothers. Noel later stated that he only talked to Liam onstage during the last few months the band was together.
Days later, reports circled that the brothers’ mother, Peggy, was very upset by the lawsuit. Liam then told the press that all he wanted was for Noel to apologize and that he was sad that he had to resort to the legal system to get the apology that he deserved. Liam was reported to have felt anger and sadness that their relationship had deteriorated to the point where he had to sue to get an apology from his brother.
Noel stated during an online chat with fans on August 22, 2001, that Liam had indeed been diagnosed with laryngitis by a doctor prior to the band’s cancellation of the gig in question. However, he also stated that he felt disappointed that Liam was offended by his comments in the first place.
Two days later, on August 24, 2011, it was reported that Liam, satisfied with the apology, had dropped the lawsuit.
