Each year the Morgan Stanley Great Britons Awards honour the key figures of the past year – as nominated by the British public. Across November, with our partners The Daily Telegraph and Classic FM, we invite you to nominate across seven categories: Arts, Business, Creative Industries, Campaigning & Public Life, Environment, Science & Innovation and Sport. Category winners are selected by a two-stage judging process: a shortlist panel who select three nominees to appear on the shortlist followed by a final judging panel who choose each category winner and the overall Morgan Stanley Great Briton of the year
Morgan Stanley Great Britons, which culminates in the Awards, aims to explore, express and celebrate what it means to be British according to people living in Britain today. As part of this ongoing enterprise, research has been conducted (with the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) in 2004 and the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) in 2005) to consider the varying definitions of Britishness. In 2006, we developed the Morgan Stanley Great Britons Education Programme for 11 to 16 year olds offering young people growing up in Britain the opportunity to consider the concept and express their observations in a positive and healthy way. We continue to build on the Education Programme and this year have given young people the chance to write their own ‘British Charter’ which can be entered into a student competition. We also held the Morgan Stanley Great Britons debate in Westminster on ‘Can Britishness be taught?’ The debate discussed the challenges of engaging young people in questions of national identity, as well as moving to a broader discussion of Britishness.
As part of our aim Morgan Stanley support British artists, specifically in the field of sculpture. Each year we therefore commission a British sculptor to design the award.
