Despite the fact that he was born before the start of WW1, suffered a stroke in 2001 and broke his leg in 2004, Lord Deedes still managed to visit Darfur in July 2004 to bring the plight of the region to international attention - proof, if ever it were needed, of his phenomenal strength and determination. He started covering conflict areas in 1935 in Abyssinia and is still doing so 70 years on. In 2004, he contributed to The Weekenders, a book to raise money for the United Nation’s Children's Fund.
