In order to develop the judging criteria for the Morgan Stanley Great Briton Awards, the programme partners and the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA), commissioned a piece of international research giving an understanding of the perceptions of British values and characteristics here and abroad.
The research included focus groups in Milan, Mumbai, Chicago and King’s Lynn together with a series of interviews with foreign correspondents based in London and abroad. British traits that emerged from the research included the ‘British sense of humour’, politeness with a ‘sense of propriety’, the idea of ‘individuality’ and a reverence for tradition and history. Whether these traits were seen positively or negatively varied depending on the focus group's location. Encouragingly, the British were generally seen as a ‘tolerant’ and multi-cultural society. More details of the research are available.
