Dame Helen: the Emmy, Golden Globe and Academy award winning actress of film, stage and TV. She won the Emmy award for her performance in Channel 4’s Elizabeth and also picked up two Golden Globes for her role. After her first starring role in 1965 as Cleopatra for the National Youth Theatre, she went on to join the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company where she played Lady Macbeth in Trevor Nunn’s production of the play. In addition to her role as Jane Tennison in TVs Prime Suspect, she is also well known for her numerous film roles including the hilarious and poignant Calendar Girls and the critically acclaimed Madness of King George, the latter of which earned her her first Oscar nomination. She was made a Dame in 2003 by the very woman who she would go on to imitate to such great effect.
In 2006 she played the ultimate 'British' role in The Queen, a film regarding the monarchy’s reactions to the events following the death of Princess Diana. The film was met with critical acclaim after its premiere in Venice and Dame Helen won almost every award available for her role including that elusive academy award.
The judges felt 2006 was undeniably “her year” and that Dame Helen Mirren was “the British actor of the year”. For the judges, her 2006 performances and achievements, ranging from the last of the Prime Suspect programmes to the two Elizabeths, illustrated the diversity of her acting talents and rapidly secured her win. The “exquisite actor” was also commended for appearing to have remained unchanged despite her phenomenal success.
