Sir David Attenborough's voice alone conjures up a kaleidoscope of the world's flora and fauna and the myriad environments from which he has brought the natural world to millions. His modest, fun and interesting style thrills and educates simultaneously. His dedication has made Sir David one of Britain's favourite and most trusted personalities. Rising through the ranks of the BBC, Sir David has been the controller of BBC2 and BBC Television's Director of Programmes.
Sir David's work as a naturalist has made him one of the most credible advocates of the causes he supports, the latest among them highlighted in the 2006 programmes on climate change: ‘Are we changing planet Earth?’ and ‘Can we save planet Earth?’. 2006 also saw the broadcast of Planet Earth, a major natural history series narrated by Sir David.
Sir David’s dedication, modesty and a lifetime’s work made him a “natural” winner. The judges described him as a “brilliant”, “outstanding” and “self-effacing” individual who has made an “amazing contribution to the creative industries and broadcasting over the last 50 years”. They felt that in 2006 through Planet Earth he yet again inspired and captivated people from every demographic, “from primary school to pensioner”, infecting his audiences with his utter enthusiasm for the subject at hand. They found it truly remarkable that year after year he managed to produce series upon series that just kept getting better.
