During its development we spoke with Citizenship teachers from a range of schools to make sure it meets your needs and provides you with clear guidelines and effective resources. We found that teachers felt Britishness is a highly important topic to address, but that it can be a difficult one to teach. We took this feedback on board and worked closely with a Citizenship teacher to develop, what we hope, are highly useful lessons. The lessons encourage students to learn about Britishness by exploring and appreciating the identity and diversity of British society, rather than by defining what Britishness means.
The lessons are designed to be taught for an hour and each lesson has three components; a lesson plan, a PowerPoint in-lesson guide and resources for students. The lesson guide and resources are in flexible formats to enable you to adapt them if you wish. The lesson plans use Bloom’s Taxonomy to meet differing ability levels.
On October 2007 we held the Morgan Stanley Great Britons Debate in Westminster on ‘Can Britishness be taught?’ The debate discussed the challenges of engaging young people in questions of national identity, as well as moving to a broader discussion of Britishness.
